According to a study published in the journal Science Advances, nanoparticle backpacks combined with probiotics can treat IBD, including Crohn′s disease and ulcerative colitis. In the study, the University of Wisconsin–Madison researchers devised specialized nanoparticles to neutralize molecules implicated in IBD.

The researchers claimed that the nanoparticle backpacks are comprised of sulfide and hyaluronic acid molecules. The sulfide molecule in the structure targets the reactive oxygen species, whereas hyaluronic acid functions as an anti-inflammatory agent.

The researchers, led by Dr. Quanyin Hu, a biomedical engineer, and professor, noted that the treatment is administered orally, which could make it a palatable alternative to other more invasive forms of IBD treatment such as partial or complete removal of the colon.
